In his first year at Adelphi, Richey competed in AAU sponsored track events. He lettered in cross-country and both indoor and outdoor track and field his junior and senior years. In cross-country, Richey’s name appears in numerous
Delphian recaps, often finishing behind standout and fellow Hall of Famer Louis Vlogianitis ’57. He also competed in all running events from the 100-yard dash to the mile run, often competing in multiple events at the track meets.
He also played two years of varsity lacrosse as a midfielder under Coach Claude Ruggian. At the time, the Panthers only had five midfielders and Richey was called upon to play almost the entire game, including the face-off. In 1957 he was awarded the Keen-Fijiou Award, given to the senior athlete who contributed the most to Adelphi Athletics.
Richey was one of the relay runners who participated in Adelphi’s 25
th Anniversary Celebration of moving to Garden City in 1929 and is photographed handing the “torch of knowledge” to fellow teammate Roy Shapiro at the Nassau County line.
He graduated in 1957 with a BBA in accounting and completed his masters in secondary education in 1958. His Masters thesis was entitled “Basic Fundamentals to be used in coaching high school field events”, Head Cross-Country/Track Coach, Stuart Parks, serving as his advisor. Richey stayed on at Adelphi as the freshman cross-country coach from 1958-1960 and also coached the runners on the indoor and outdoor track teams those same years under Parks.
