Nussbaum was part of the Adelphi Swim team. His most successful season came during his junior year where he set a school and Metropolitan collegiate record in the 200-yard individual medley at the Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships. His time earned him a trip to compete in the NCAA Division II championships in Long Beach, California. He finished the 200-yard individual medley in a personal best of 1:57.6, finishing 13th out of 40 competitors, just missing out on All-American status by four tenths of a second. He was named the team MVP that year and again in his senior year.
