Joseph Morin was instrumental in the turnaround for the Adelphi University men’s lacrosse program in the early 1960s. Morin came to campus as a freshman in 1959, but he began to show what he could do in the midfield beginning in his sophomore season. Under the tutelage of then-first year head coach Lou Flego, Morin scored 14 goals to finish second behind team MVP Frank Scudieri in 1960. While the Panthers went 3-17-1 over Morin’s first two seasons, he led the team to two Northwest B Division titles and a combined 17-7 record as an upperclassman.
In 1961, the junior captain was named All-Division and All-American after scoring a team-leading 24 goals to lead the men’s lacrosse team to a 9-4 overall record. The team’s improvement from seven games under .500 (2-9 in 1960) to five games over in one season was one of the greatest in college lacrosse history. As a senior, Morin again led the team in goals (22), en route to setting what was the Adelphi record in career goals at that time (60). At 8-3, the Panthers again won the Northwest B Division title under Morin’s on-field leadership, and he was named All-American for the second time, as well as the team’s MVP.
Finally, Morin showed his versatility when he became Adelphi’s second selection, and the first in almost a decade following Don Kohart in 1953, to the North/South Collegiate All-Star Game. Morin started at attack - a position he never played in college.
