McPherson, during his running career, gained All-American status nine times, was part of the world record mile relay team and was an NCAA individual and relay champion. At the 1970 NCAA Outdoor Championships, he became the first Adelphi runner to capture an individual NCAA title, winning the 440-yard dash in 46.2. This performance was voted the most outstanding individual performance of the meet. The same meet, he anchored the winning mile relay team in a fast 45.8 split. McPherson won the IC4A Outdoor Championship in the 440-yard dash and was part of the 1971 Outdoor NCAA record setting mile relay team.
The mile relay dominated NCAA’s winning indoor titles in both 1971 and ’72. He was also part of the mile relay team that set the East Coast Collegiate record in 1971 with a time of 3:07.5. In 1972 he also represented the United States in the 600 yard run on the U.S. National team vs. the U.S.S.R.
