Robert Baratta was a born sprinter, competing in track while at New Utrecht High School and in the Police Athletic League (PAL). After high school Baratta attended CCNY before entering the United States Coast Guard.
Upon discharge from the United States Coast Guard Baratta attended Adelphi University where he represented the Brown and Gold at numerous big college track meets, winning the 100 and 220 yard dash at the 1957 outdoor Collegiate Track Conference championships held on Stiles Field. Baratta set CTC record of 10.9 and 21.6 in the 100 and 220 yard while picking up his victories.
He was also chosen to compete in the New York vs. London track meet held in London, England and competed for the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) upon graduation from Adelphi.
