Spitzner was a mainstay in the swimming pool during his time at Adelphi and was a key cog in the Brown and Gold's 1956 undefeated season, the first in program history. Spitzner was 10-0 in the 200 yard backstroke that season and was named the schools Most Outstanding Senior Athlete. At one time, Spitzner held pool records in the 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard backstroke, individual medley, 300 yard medley relay and the 4x100 yard freestyle relay.
