Laura (DeAngelis) Klimuszko enrolled at Adelphi in the fall of 1994 and despite joining a women’s volleyball team that was in just its second year of existence, became one of the most decorated players in program history.

After amassing 233 kills as a freshman, DeAngelis began to take a leadership role as a sophomore which continued for the duration of her career. In 1995, DeAngelis recorded 284 kills on the season before bettering that mark as a junior, leading the team with 287, and again leading the team with 250 kills as a senior. For her efforts, DeAngelis was named to the All-NYCAC Second Team in 1996 and 1997, and was named Adelphi’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1996. As a senior, she was named the Student-Athlete of the Week on two occasions, and helped the Panthers to a best-ever third place finish in the NYCAC after the team defeated C.W. Post (now LIU-Post) in the first round of the playoffs.

DeAngelis retired as the all-time program leader in games played (379), kills (1054) and digs (1,071), becoming the first player in program history to crack the 1,000 mark in both kills and digs. She also appeared three times on the single-season record list for kills, ranking second in 1996 (287), third in for 1995 (284) and fifth for 1997 (250). She currently ranks third all-time in career kills, and holds the current program record for kills in a match. On Oct. 6, 1997, she recorded 27 kills against Molloy College in what was, at the time, the longest match in Adelphi volleyball history.

Academically, DeAngelis received departmental honors in physical education in the fall of 1995, and in both the fall and spring of 1997. She was also inducted into Adelphi’s Delta Eta chapter of the Phi Epsilon Kappa fraternity, a national professional fraternity for those in and/or pursuing careers in physical education, health, recreation, dance, human performance, exercise science, sports medicine and sports management. After graduating in 1998 with a degree in physical education, DeAngelis earned her master’s degree in health education from Adelphi in 2002. She currently resides in West Islip, N.Y. with her husband Paul and children, Caylee and Gannon.
