Hughes enjoyed a very successful career as a Panther Lacrosse player. He was a three-time All-American (1979- 81), part of a team that won the NCAA Championship twice (1979, 1981) and recorded eight assists in the 1981 championship earning him the Brine Award (NCAA Final Four MVP, 1981). He led the team in assists in 1980 with 62, and again in 1981 with 43. Hughes name also appears in the record books numerous times. Under single season division II points, he is third with 97 and ninth with 68 as well as fourth and sixth in assists with 62 and 43 respectively. His career records include second in points with 274, second in assists with 153 and fourth in goals with 121. Additionally, he participated in the 1981 North-South All Star game.
