She excelled in both basketball and softball during her Adelphi years, appearing in the NCAA College World Series with the University softball team. Portia was a member of the United States Junior National Handball Team in 1981. She represented the East Squad in the National Sports Festival. Portia started in the tournament as the playmaker, scoring three goals. Her efforts helped the team attain the gold medal. At the sports festival she was picked for the Junior National Team and she made the East Squad through a tryout that was held at Adelphi. The 1981 Sophomore Athlete of the Year, Lack graduated from Adelphi University in 1985 where she earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education.
