Finger came to Adelphi University on a football scholarship. During his three plus years as a Panther, he participated in a myriad of athletic teams on campus. When not on the football field, he could be found playing basketball, lacrosse, golf, tennis, bowling and even softball. Not surprisingly, he was named the Adelphi Outstanding Athlete of the Class of 1955.
He quickly established himself as a premier athlete on the Garden City campus. It was not uncommon to see his name in the headlines of the weekly paper. The all-around athlete made the Long Island All-Scholastic squad for three years with a 19 point per game average. As captain in his senior year, he led his division in scoring, and was twice voted team MVP. In his four years on the gridiron, Finger scored over half the team’s touchdowns and kicked all the extra points, missing only three in the last three years.
Finger also excelled on the baseball diamond. In his four-year varsity stay, he played every position in the outfield, as well as short-stop, third, and first base.
