Robert E. Hartwell, an energetic leader with innovative ideas, has been the Director of Athletics at Adelphi University for over 20 years. Under his guidance, he has led Adelphi to six NCAA Division II Championships and countless NCAA appearances. In addition Adelphi has won the East Coast Conference (formerly the NYCAC) Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the most outstanding overall athletic program, in seven of the 14 years of its existence including most recently in 2007-08.
 
Hartwell was honored by Adelphi with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2005. In 2002, Hartwell was named the Northeast Region AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA). In 1993, he instituted the Panther Club, a support group that enhances the athletics program with their financial contributions, and the Annual Golf Classic, a fall fundraising and social event in 1989. He re-established the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1991 with such former athletics' alumni as Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis and Olympic track stars Bob Beamon and Mel Pender being enshrined. The Department of Athletics added women's lacrosse and women's volleyball as varsity sports in the 1990s.
