Ruggian was the first head coach in the history of the Adelphi University men’s lacrosse program. Ruggian started the program in 1948 and sat on the bench until 1959, a span of 12 seasons.
In those years Ruggian posted four seasons with winning percentages of .500 or better, including a 3-1 record in the teams very first year. Ruggian also coached six Panthers to All-American honors and had one player compete in the prestigious USILA North-South game. Six athletes who learned under Ruggian have also been selected for the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame. He also coached freshman baseball and golf while teaching physical education. Additionally, he was a teacher of swimming to handicap learners.
