Adelphi Athletics Hall of Fame
Under the direction of former Athletic Director George Faherty, the Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1961 to honor those former Adelphi athletes, coaches and friends of the university who have distinguished themselves during their time on campus or thereafter.
From 1961 until 1981, the university inducted 61 honorees into the Hall of Fame. Among those honored were former President Dr. Paul Eddy, former baseball coach Ron Davies, former major league pitcher Joe Sambito, former lacrosse standout Paul "Doc" Doherty, and former track coach Stu Parks.
After a 10-year hiatus, the Hall of Fame was reestablished in 1991, and has since inducted outstanding athletes including Olympic record-holder Bob Beamon, fellow Olympian Portia Lack, radio and television broadcaster Al Trautwig, and lacrosse great Bob Engelke. In 1992, Al Davis, President of the Oakland Raiders and a former Adelphi coach, was inducted.
Current membership in the Hall of Fame stands at 223, and Adelphi celebrated the 50th anniversary of its inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2011.
Adelphi Hall of Fame Criteria and Nomination Form
In 2008, the Hall of Fame display wall was moved from the Ruth S. Harley University Center to its new home in the Hall of Fame Atrium in the new Center for Recreation and Sports. A graphic display of memorabilia in special wall mounted casings along with photography of legendary athletes as well as photos of each Hall of Famer will greet alumni, guests and fans as they make their way into the gymnasium.
In addition to Hall of Fame induction, the biennial event has also awarded the Frank Cassell Memorial Award since 1991, and the Woodruff Award since 1998.
Created in honor of former Head Athletic Trainer (1953-74) and Adelphi Hall of Famer, Frank Cassell -- a healer, counselor, motivator, father, confessor and sincere friend of the Adelphi athlete -- his spirit epitomized what college athletics should be. This award recognizes individuals who make contributions above and beyond to Adelphi athletics.
The Woodruff Award, a recognition of lifetime achievement in athletics throughout the metropolitan New York area, is presented for excellence in coaching, teaching and educating young adults. This award salutes an ambassador of sportsmanship and goodwill, while stressing that athletics enhances the educational experience and quality of life.

Finally, the Panther Legendary Team Award was introduced in 2009, and has honored eight teams across seven sports in that time. To be considered, teams must have 1) been the first to reach a new or high level of success, 2) have set or broken previous records and accomplishments, 3) have individuals, through the team's success, who were recognized for accomplishments and 4) as a team, brought honor and positive recognition (on a regional and national level) to Adelphi and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
