Hall of Fame
Frank Cassell was the second member of the Adelphi Athletics department to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Cassell in many was involved in the success that each intercollegiate team had experienced, serving as Adelphi’s athletic trainer from 1953 until 1974.
Cassell began his career as a standout basketball player and captained his squad during his senior year at Newton High School. He was a selection on the All-Queens team and was selected as the top defensive guard. He went on later to earn his bachelors of Psychology and Education from Fordham University and the earned his New York State Medical Masseur’s License. He was also a member of the Eastern and National Athletic Trainers Association.
During World War II, Cassell was in charge of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at a North Carolina base. Cassell also worked with such professional teams as the New York Giants (football) and the Cleveland Browns.
In 1991, the Frank Cassell Memorial Award was added to the Hall of Fame Celebration in his honor. The description of the award includes “A healer, counselor, motivator, father, confessor and since friend of Adelphi Athletics, his spirit epitomizes what college athletcs should be. This award recognizes contributions made to Adelphi Athletics above and beyond.
