Loughlin is one of the early standouts in lacrosse at Adelphi having played on the first team when the sport began in 1948 through 1950. He was co-captain of the stick squad during his senior year when the team posted a 5-3 record with wins over Trinity, Lafayette, MIT, Hofstra and CCNY. Loughlin continued his interest in the sport after graduation, evidenced by his winning the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Man of the Year award in 1966. He was instrumental in organizing the school’s Men’s Athletic Association, serving as its first president and was a representative of the Student Government and member of the Interfraternity Council. The Kitay-Loughlin Award is given in part of his name to the Adelphi lacrosse player who shows outstanding defensive skills. He was more recently honored by being elected into the Rochester Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2014.
