The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to cross island rival C.W. Post on Tuesday, September 27 in a non-conference clash. The Panthers trailed 8-5 in the fifth set of a back and forth contest, but rallied to pull out a 19-17 win and take the match, 3-2. WIth the victory Adelphi improves to 8-3 overall and runs their win streak to six games, while C.W. Post falls to 7-8.
Chelsea Overholt led the offense with 16 kills and
Emily Dorko and
Kaitlyn DeStefano also reached double digits with 14 and 11 respectively.
Katie Bryson led the team with 46 assists, while
Bianca Hernandez led the Panthers with 22 digs and
Alexandra Kahen chipped in 21.
Katie Bryson,
Bree Popham and Overholt also contributed double figure digs, with 16, 14 and 10.
Adelphi and CW Post played a tight first set, with the Panthers taking their largest lead of the game, 23-19 on a
Patawe Simms kill. The Pioneers would battle back, knotting the game at 24, but back-to-back kills from Bryson and Overholt gave Adelphi a 26-24 win.
The second game was more of the same again taking a four point lead late, 24-20 on a
Colleen Raga kill. CW Post bounced back again, tying the game at 25 on a Lisa Delfs kill, before scoring the final two point to take a 27-25 win and knot the contest at one game each.
The third game was deadlocked at 10 before, a Pioneer kill and three straight Adelphi attack errors led to a 14-10 CW Post advantage. The Pioneers would take control from there, as Adelphi could get no closer then two, 16-14, ultimately falling 25-20.
The tide turned in the fourth game as the Panthers turned another back and forth affair into a 25-20 victory. The score was tied again at 14, but this time Adelphi used a 7-1 run, that included two kills from
Samantha Rico to take a 21-15 lead on the way to their 25-20 win.
The fifth and final game saw the visitors take a 8-5 lead, but a Dorko kill and back-to-back service aces from Rico knotted the action at eight. The Pioneers slipped out to another three point lead, only to be reeled back in by the Panthers again, 12-12. From there the game would be tied at 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 when an Overholt kill, followed by another Rico ace gave Adelphi the 19-17 game five victory and the, 3-2 match win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, October 1 when they travel to Albany, New York to take on Northeast-10 opponent St. Rose at 1:00 pm.
