New Haven, Conn. – Kicking off the 2015-16 indoor season yesterday, the Adelphi University track and field program had the men place sixth with the women claiming fifth place at the Southern Connecticut State hosted Elm City Challenge.
For the women's side,
Ena Otaka clinched fourth place in the 55 meter finals behind a 7.45 time after claiming the same place in the preliminaries on the heels of a 7.37 clocking. Also earning points,
Idongesit Ekong posted a sixth place time of 1:03.87. The Brown and Gold also had back-to-back finishes in the 800 meters as
Angela Mongitore and
Gabriela Saltos finished second and third with respective times of 2:25.81 and 2:25.88.
Mary Camarano took home the lone victory with an 8.33 time in the 55 meter hurdles, however, not before besting that time in the preliminaries to also finish in first at 8.21. Later, to cap off the action on the track for the women,
Aleisha Jeffers, Camarano, Ekong, and Saltos brought home eight points with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay by combining for a 4:09.52.
In the field, personal bests were set for both sides of the program during the throwing events. Starting with the women's weight throw,
Myrika Harding landed a toss of 14.88 meters for third place. Additionally,
Emily Hagarty finished in fifth place overall in the pentathlon while also scoring 10 points towards the team score after totaling 2,921 points in her five events.
For the men's side of the weight throw,
Travis Mielko tied for fourth after notching a distance of 14.80 meters on his third throw. Also in the field,
Kip Jackson finished in second during the high jump on a leap of 1.80 meters that was achieved on his first attempt at that height. Back on the track,
Jose Velasquez scored a point with a sixth place mile time of 4:34.44.
