Syracuse, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the men's and women's cross country teams took on the rest of the conference at the Northeast-10 Cross Country Championships held at Jamesville Beach County Park, hosted by Le Moyne College. The women had a solid outing, improving five spots from last year to take second while the men slipped one spot from a year ago to fifth in the tight field.

Behind the strength of five runners in the top-30 and a 49 second spread, the women's squad put together a team score of 80 for runner-up honors, falling behind only Stonehill by 15 points.

“I am very pleased with the way the women ran today,” Head Coach Katie Rees said. “Before the race, I told them to go out, stick to the game plan, run hard and have fun and that's exactly what they did; it paid off.”

Elizabeth Eickelberg was the Brown and Gold's top finisher as she covered the 5k course in 19:07 which was good enough for seventh place and a spot on the All-Conference First Team.

Sophomore teammates Jennifer McNally and Larissa Melendez, who have consistently been the three and four runners, were the Panther's second and third finishers on the day. Separated by just six seconds, McNally registered a time of 19:15 and placed 12th while Melendez clocked in at 19:21 and was 14th. Each of the girls earned Second-Team All-Conference honors.

Senior Jacqueline Kaste slipped in the top-20 with a 19:29 performance for 19th place and picked up the Panther's fourth and final All-Conference nod with a spot on the Third Team. Lastly, freshman Kristina Coiro rounded out the top-five with a 29th place overall finish (28th in scoring) with a mark of 19:55 to give the Panthers all five runners under 20 minutes. Additionally, she was the third fastest freshman in the field to finish the race.

“We set out for top-two and we accomplished our goal,” stated Rees. “Now we have our sights set on Regionals with the intent to earn a team spot to go to nationals!”

Jeptui Cherutich of AIC was the overall race winner in a time of 18:23. Southern Connecticut State, St. Rose and American International rounded out the three, four and five teams respectively.

The men placed two in the top-25 and five in the top-40 to string together 137 points for fifth place in the team scoring.

“We came in ranked fifth in the conference and that's how we finished today,” said Rees. “The men's field is very deep and extremely competitive and the regional will be just as tough, but I'm happy with the way they performed especially after not tapering.”

Andrew Coelho led the men once again with a sixth place finish and a spot on the All-Conference First Team. He covered the 8k course in 25:36. Junior David DeSalvo was the second Adelphi finisher, placing 22nd with a time of 26:29, just narrowly missing All-Conference kudos by less than one second.

The trio of Ryan Healy, William Marois and Brendan Abrams finished in a cluster separated by three spots and three seconds. Healy was 35th in 27:11 with Marois right on his heels in 27:12 and 12th while Abrams rounded out the triplet with 27:14 for 38th place.

“With conferences behind us, we're going to taper and get everyone ready for the Regional,” described Rees. “It's a whole new ballgame with the distance changing to 10k, and I think our guys, both veterans and rookies, will be ready to handle it. Our goals remain the same; to get a top-four finish.”

AIC's Michael Biwott was the overall victor with a time of 24:41. Stonehill edged out AIC for the team title by a single point, 60-61 with UMass Lowell in the hunt, checking in a third with 63 points. Bentley was fourth with 96 points.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, November 4 when they compete in the NCAA East Region Championships in Nashua, New Hampshire.
