Garden City, N.Y. - The volleyball team hosted the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire earlier this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference meeting. Adelphi was pushed to the brink, but standout performances on both the offensive and defensive ends enabled them to come out on the business end of the 3-2 final score (21-25, 25-9, 25-23, 19-25, 15-9). With the win, the Panthers advance to 16-7, 9-3 NE-10 while the Penmen drop to 5-15, 3-10 NE-10.
The Panthers came out sluggish, falling behind 4-0 early on, but would pull even with their counterparts on two occasions. However, it's as close as they would get, giving up three unaswered points to fall 25-21 in the first game. Adelphi came to life in the second, throwing down 16 kills, and going on two runs of 8-0 and 6-0 to outdistance themselves by a score of 25-9.
The third game was hard fought on both ends. The Penmen held the lead through the halfway point until a kill by
Colleen Raga knotted the score at 12 all. SNH put a four point run in play, but from there,
Bree Popham's service ace proved to be a momentum swing as the Panthers charged all the way to the 25 point mark courtesy of a 13-7 run capped by an
Erika Loomer kill on an assist from
Alexandra Kahen.
The Penmen shook off the loss and started fresh in the fourth, staying ahead virtually the entire duration of the game and putting away 13 kills without a single hitting error. For their efforts, they were rewarded with a 25-19 win to force a fifth and deciding game. Kaitlyn DeStafano set the tone early with an opening game kill which was followed by two SNH errors, giving the Panthers an early lead. One of Danielle Coffey's team high 11 kills brought the score at four apiece, but Simms responded with a kill of her own. From there, Adelphi didn't look back as they finished off their NE-10 foes by way of a 15-9 score.
Patawe Simms led all comers with 14 kills while
Chelsea Overholt was close behind with 12 of her own.
Katie Bryson had a game high 38 digs while teammate
Bianca Hernandez also had a game, and season high of 31 digs.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, November 1 when they host the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in the Center for Recreation and Sports at 7pm in a NE-10 matchup.
