Bethlehem, PAThis afternoon, the men's and women's cross country squads headed to Lehigh University to compete in the famed Paul Short Invitational. In a meet that features nearly 100 schools across all three NCAA divisions, Adelphi, along with everyone else in attendance, battled the heat on a day that effected dozens of runners causing dozens of drop outs. However, both teams fared well with the men placing 35th in the Brown race while the women placed 40th in the Brown race as well.

Once again, Elizabeth Eickelberg led the way for the Panthers as she has been so far this year. The senior impressed over the 6k course with a 10th place finish in a time of 22:07; just six seconds off her best time. Junior Larissa Melendez also had a strong showing and registered at time of 23:06 for a solid 55th place showing.

Rounding out the Panther's five-woman team was Cecelia Capozzoli, Bryhanna Charles and Taylor Velez. Capozzoli rolled in at 26:42 while Charles was clocked at 28:57. Velez was the Panther's fifth harrier with a time of 29:59.

On the men's side, Connor Dolan was the top runner for the Brown and Gold. His time of 26:35 was good enough for a 59th place finish while Chris Reilly was second in a time of 27:52 which earned him 184th place.

Justin Nakrin stepped up as their third runner. The graduate student covered the 8k course in 28:03 while teammate Gregory Bader was a few steps behind in 28:05. Rounding out the six-man contingent was Daniel Morley and Justin Macari. Morely clocked in at 28:22 while Macari covered the course in 28:37.

*The Panthers, along with the hundreds of other collegiate runners, battled with the heat that caused dozens to drop out of the race. Emergency teams forced the meet to cancel the last race of the day because of the high number of runners that needed medical attention.

Coach's Thoughts on the Race
"It was a tough day for most," stated Katie Rees. "They cancelled the meet before the last women's race because there were so many heat-related injuries and the hospitals and emergency services told them that they had to shut down the meet. Betsy and Larissa both had great races and ran significantly faster than what they ran there last year. Everyone else was affected by the weather. Connor ran great and set a personal best. Dan, Justin and Justin all ran well too. But we had a bunch of people that did not start because of minor injuries and who didn't finish because of the heat. So the team scores were out the window".

Up Next
The Panthers will rest next weekend before hitting the trails once again on Saturday, October 19 when they compete at the University of Albany Invitational in Albany, N.Y.
