Worcester, Mass. - The Adelphi University baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Assumption College on Saturday, falling 8-6 in the opener before taking the nightcap 10-6. The Panthers move to 14-16 overall and 5-11 in NE-10 play, while the Greyhounds are 8-18 overall.
In game one, Adelphi erased a 6-3 deficit with a three-run seventh inning rally, but a two-run eighth inning home run by Assumption's Ysander Figueroa gave the Greyhounds the win.
Jeff Andersen was tagged with the loss on the mound for the Panthers in relief of starter
Dillon McNamara, who allowed six runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Justin Farnum knocked a team-high three hits including a double, while
Jamie Liebowitz ripped a single and a double and
Donato Signore singled twice.
Game two proved a back-and-forth affair, and after holding an early lead, the Panthers fell behind via a three-run seventh for Assumption. Trailing 5-4 heading to the top of the eighth,
Anthony Zarrella, who went 2-4 with his fourth home run on the year, drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. That set the stage for Liebowitz to rip the go-ahead bases-clearing double down the left field line, giving the Panthers enough room for
James McCormack and
Matt Abramowitz to toss an inning of relief each and seal the win.
Zarrella drove in three runs and reached base four times, while
Nick Zito went 3-6, doubled, scored twice and drove in three runs in his first stint at the leadoff spot. Signore,
Craig Matteo and
Vincent Sharkey each had two hits to help account for 13 Adelphi hits in the nightcap.
The Panthers used six pitchers in the high-scoring contest, and
Chris Murphy picked up his third win of the season in two-thirds of an inning of relief.
Jimmy Milani went 1.1 scoreless innings as the first man out of the bullpen, and McCormack worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Adelphi squares off against Assumption again for a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
