Garden City, N.Y. – Reigning Northeast 10 Pitcher of the Year John Carver will continue his baseball career professionally, as he signed with the Houston Astros organization on Wednesday afternoon after the MLB Draft.
"I am extremely blessed for this opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream of mine as a professional baseball player," Carver said.
"I am truly grateful for my time at Adelphi and would not be in this position if it wasn't for all of the people who have helped me along the way. I can't wait to see what the future holds for my career."
Carver wraps up his collegiate career with a phenomenal season. Named the Northeast 10 Pitcher of the Year, NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year and a D2CCA All-American, he posted a 2.67 ERA and led the conference in the regular season in strikeouts (92) and batting average against (.186). The right-hander also ranked among the Northeast 10's top five in wins (eight) and ERA. Nationally, Carver ranked first in Division II in strikeouts per nine innings (14.44) and 20th in both strikeouts and ERA.
The Lynbrook native will join former teammate Dawson Montesa in the MLB farm system, as the 2025 Northeast 10 Pitcher of the Year and Adelphi single-season strikeout leader was selected 72nd overall by the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Montesa was one of nine Division II players selected in the draft.
"We are so happy for John and his family. To see him get this opportunity after all of the hard work he has put in is a special moment for our program," head coach Mike Gaffney said.
"For me, John is one of the best competitors I have ever been around. He came to the park every day and brought a level of leadership and intensity we needed as a team, which led us to having a great season. We are excited to see him represent Adelphi at the next level with the Astros!"
Now including Carver and Montesa, the Panthers have seen five players join MLB organizations over the past 10 years. Matt Alifano signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 2022, Ed Baram '19 was selected in the 30th round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics and Jonathon Mulford '16 was selected in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
