Garden City, N.Y. - The hot bats of the Adelphi University baseball team exploded for 19 hits in a 13-1 win over Dominican College at William J. Bonomo Field on Thursday, earning the Panthers their second straight win. Adelphi improves to 8-5 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 4-14 overall.

Seven Panthers collected multiple hits in the offensive showcase, most notably junior Anthony Zarrella, who went 2-3, scored three runs and drove in five including a monstrous grand slam to right center field. Senior Jamie Liebowitz tripled and knocked in three runs to cap a 3-5 day at the plate, and classmate Justin Farnum doubled twice. Craig Matteo, Lucas Romeo, Tyler Barrett and Jacob Beard each collected a pair of hits to round out the high-powered Adelphi offense.

On the mound, freshman Mike Cranston picked up the win in relief, throwing three innings of one-hit, shutout baseball. Starter Michael Carletti tossed four innings, scattering six hits and allowing the lone run, while Chris Murphy and Chris Pabisch each hurled an inning of a perfect relief.

For Dominican, Tony Blake and Tyler Clark each rapped two hits, with the latter driving in the Chargers' lone run. Starting pitcher Ryan Calby suffered the loss, surrendering six earned runs on 12 hits in four innings.

The Panthers scored a combined 11 runs between the third, fourth and fifth innings, then tacked on another pair in the seventh. Five hits, including a two-run single by Richard Mejia, got things going in the third for the Panthers, and the contagious hitting continued well into the fourth frame. Back-to-back singles by Beard and Romeo, followed by a one-out RBI base knock for Zarrella, set the stage for Liebowitz to bring home two with a triple to the center field wall, resulting in 7-1 lead.

Adelphi kept the foot on the throttle in the fifth, loading the bases after Matteo drew a two-out walk. Looking to blow the game open, Zarrella turned around a first-pitch fastball and punished it over the right center field wall for a grand slam, stretching the lead to 11-1.

The Panthers grabbed two more runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Gaetano and an RBI groundout by Liebowitz, giving the Adelphi bullpen plenty of room to cruise through the last six outs of the game.

Adelphi is slated for its Northeast-10 Conference home opener tomorrow when the Panthers take on Bentley University at 3:30 p.m.
