Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey and women's basketball teams donated 42 dresses this week for the 18th annual Long Island Volunteer Center Prom Botique. All collected items will be donated and distributed free of charge to girls of families across Long Island who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown for their prom, awards ceremony, or graduation event.

The teams accepted donations for two weeks and received generous contributions from the Adelphi athletic department, student body and the surrounding community. The squads' efforts helped build upon an already wildly successful community service tradition. According to the Long Island Volunteer Center website, over 1,300 girls benefited from 65 different schools and nonprofit youth organizations across Long Island benefited from last year's event.

Created in 1992 to improve the quality of life for all Long Islanders, the Long Island Volunteer Center is a nonprofit organization that encourages people to engage in service to their communities and mobilizes volunteers and donations to support community service initiatives.
