Seven to Be Inducted into '05 Hall of Fame

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announces its Class of 2005 Hall of Fame nominees to be inducted on Thursday, April 21, at the Ruth S. Harley University Center on its Garden City campus. The 35th annual Hall of Fame dinner, which honors those individuals who have made significant contributions to the athletics program, includes Christopher M. Armas '94, William N. Dabney '77, Morton Diamond '53, Richard W. Grismer '98, Robert E. Hartwell, Laura A. Martin '97 and Ron Schneider '79.

Armas, an All-America and member of the Adelphi men's soccer team from 1990-93, led the Panthers to three NCAA berths. A former member of the Long Island Rough Riders, he has played with Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and the U.S. national team since 1998.

Dabney participated in track and cross-country at Adelphi. He earned All-America honors by winning an individual title at the 1976 NCAA Championships in the 800 meters and still holds indoor and outdoor Adelphi records at that distance. He also qualified for the 1975 NCAA Cross-Country Championships.

Diamond lettered in track and field at Adelphi from 1950-53. He participated in the 220-yard low hurdles, 440-dash and on the relays. He was a member of the winning class mile relay at Penn Relays and a junior metropolitan AAU champion in the 440 hurdles.

Grismer was a three-time All-American in men's lacrosse, competing from 1994-97. A goalie, he recorded a 31-19 record and led the Panthers to a 1995 NCAA Championship. He remains Adelphi's all-time leader in single season and career saves.

Hartwell has been the associate dean and director of intercollegiate athletics at Adelphi for the past 19 years. Under his direction, Adelphi has won six NCAA titles and 30 New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championships. Adelphi has also taken home the NYCAC Commissioner's Cup five times in the past ten years.

Martin was a two-time All-American on the women's soccer team. She was also a two-time first-team All-Northeast Region and named NYCAC Player of the Year in 1996. She helped Adelphi to consecutive NCAA appearances in 1996 and 1997.

Schneider lettered on the men's soccer team from 1976-80, earning All-American honors. He played professional soccer in the United States and also for the Israeli National team. He has coached since the early 1980's and since 1997 has coached the Israeli National women's soccer team.

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductees, special recognition awards will be presented. This year's Woodruff Award honoree is Gail A. Marquis, VP & Personal Financial Banker for JP Morgan Chase. The Frank Cassell Memorial Award will be presented to Maggie Yoon '98, Associate Director of Community Relations at Adelphi University.

The Adelphi University Hall of Fame was founded in 1961 to honor those former athletes, coaches and friends, who have distinguished themselves during their time at the University or thereafter. The evening begins with a cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m. immediately followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
