Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will induct six outstanding honorees and recognize a historic team at its 45th annual Hall of Fame Ceremony on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Ruth S. Harley University Center in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom.
The dinner, which honors those individuals who have made significant contributions to the athletics program includes Gary Blohm '87 (Men's Lacrosse), Laura DeAngelis Klimuszko '98 MA '02 (Volleyball), Colleen Jamison Charles '99 (Softball), Jill Lessne-Solomon MS '05 MA '10 (Women's Lacrosse), Joseph Morin '62 MBA '65 (Men's Lacrosse), Dr. Robert A. Scott (Adelphi University President).
The Panther Legendary Team award will be presented to the 1989 men's lacrosse team. That Panther team has been touted as one of the best to ever grace Stiles field, posting an overall record of 12-3 and advancing to the NCAA Division I Quarterfinals. They finished the season ranked #4 in the nation and came one goal short of a spot in the Final Four, losing to Maryland in double overtime.
Blohm is among the most accomplished lacrosse players to come through Adelphi, with his name dotting the Division I career record books. He is sixth in all-time career points (108), fourth in career goals (59) and sixth in career assists (49). He capped his tenure in the Brown and Gold off with a USILA Third-Team All-America nod and a North/South All-Star game selection in 1987.
DeAngelis Klimuszko became the program standard for the Panthers, as the first player to rack up 1,000 kills. She ended her career as the benchmark in career kills (1.054), digs (1,071) and games played (379). DeAngelis Klimuszko is also the first Panther in program history to earn multiple All-Conference awards, being named second-team All-East Coast Conference in 1996 and 1997.
Jamison Charles was a mainstay on the mound for the Panthers from 1996-99, earning three All-East Coast Conference honors and All-Northeast Region status in 1997. She posted seasons of 18 and 17 wins as a starter, with a career earned run average of 1.84. Jamison Charles is second in career appearances (122), third in games started (80), third in innings pitched (630.1) and ninth in career strike outs at 262.
Lessne-Solomon is the architect of the Adelphi Women's Lacrosse dynasty, launching the program in 2001, she posted a record of 81-18 in seven years on the sidelines. Lessne-Solomon guided the Panthers to two NCAA Division II National Championships (2004, 2006) and was twice named IWLCA Division II Coach of the Year. She was also named Nassau County Coach of The Year in 2005.
Morin was a men's lacrosse pioneer, taking the field for the Panthers from 1960-62. He completed his career in the Brown and Gold as the programs leader in goals scored with 60, he was also a two-time honorable mention All-America selection and appeared in the North/South All-Star game. In addition, Morin helped Adelphi to back-to-back Northeast Division Championships.
Dr. Scott was named the ninth President of Adelphi University in July 2000 and in the past 15 years he has revitalized Adelphi. Nearly 500,000 square feet of new and renovated space has been added, including the Center for Recreation and Sports, Woodruff Hall, Motamed Field, William J. Bonomo Memorial Field and Janet L. Ficke Field. Dr. Scott was also the driving force behind Adelphi's move to the Northeast-10, a conference that better met Adelphi's needs and academic standards.
In addition to the Hall of Fame inductees, special recognition awards will be presented. Mary-Kay Messier
'86, Director of Brand Initiatives at Bauer Performance Sports, will be honored with the Woodruff Award, presented for excellence in coaching, teaching and educating young adults
, while saluting ambassadors of Sportsmanship and Goodwill
. The Frank Cassell Memorial Award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions made to Adelphi Athletics, will be presented to Lori Duggan Gold MS '12 Vice President for Communications and Christian Vaupel '96 MS '03 Vice President for University Advancement.
The Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1961 to honor those athletes, coaches and friends who have distinguished themselves during their time at the university and thereafter. For more information, please contact
