The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced today its Class of 2008 Hall of Fame inductees. The group of eight will be honored on Thursday, April 17, at the Ruth S. Harley University Center on the Garden City campus.
The 38th annual Hall of Fame dinner, which honors those individuals who have made significant contributions to the athletics program includes Paul Caffrey '91, M.B.A.'94, M.A.'99 (Soccer), Jim Cheeseman '89 (Lacrosse), Regina Dooley '85 (Softball), Richard Guy '68 (Swim/Diving), Danielle (Margarita) Leonard '00 (Softball), Richard Hardware (Track & Field), Gordon McCrae '91 (Basketball) and Roy Richey '57 (Cross-Country/Track & Field).
Caffrey, a native of Ireland, was a member of the men's soccer team from 1987-90 and is a second-team All-American and NSCAA All-North Region selection. He played professionally for the Long Island Rough Riders and later served as an assistant coach for the team. In December 2007, he was named an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-17 Men's national team.
Cheeseman participated in Division I lacrosse for the Panthers from 1986-89 as a starting goalkeeper. He holds numerous Adelphi DI records including single-season saves and career saves.
Dooley was a two-time NFCA All-American outfielder for the Adelphi softball team in 1984 and 1985. She was twice named to the NCAA Division I College World Series All-Tournament Team, for helping the Panthers to back-to-back fifth place finishes.
Guy arrived at Adelphi with several years of international diving experience under his belt gained while stationed in the Philippines with the U.S. Air Force. At Adelphi he was an Eastern Intercollegiate Champion and MET conference champion in the 1-meter and the Atlantic Coast Small College 3-meter diving champion.
Leonard, led the Panthers to a conference and ECAC Softball Championship as a freshman. During her senior campaign, she guided Adelphi to its first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. She is listed in almost every Adelphi statistical category including leading in single-season batting average (.517) and career triples (27). She is a two-time all-conference selection, an all-region pick and an ECAC All-Star.
Hardware, a 1972 Olympian in the 200 meters for Jamaica, will be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame for his excellence on the track. Hardware was six-time All-American at Adelphi from 1971-75. In 1972 he finished third in the Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 200 meters in a school-record time of 20.5.
McCrae became the men's basketball all-time leading scorer in 1978 with 1,711 points, a distinction he held for 12 years. He is currently ranked second all-time in scoring and appears in several single season and career categories. In 1978-79, he guided the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 14 years, earning All-Region honors in the process.
Richey is the second inductee under the Legends category. A transfer from St. John's University, he was an eight-time letterwinner at Adelphi in both lacrosse and cross-country and track. After graduation, he remained at Adelphi to coach the freshman cross-country team and assisted legendary coach Stu Parks with the varsity squad.
In addition to the Hall of Fame inductees, special recognition awards will be presented. U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Athletic Director, Susan Petersen Lubow will be honored with the Woodruff Award, presented for excellence in coaching, teaching and educating young adults. The Frank Cassell Memorial Award, which recognizes extraordinary contributions made to Adelphi Athletics, will be presented to Vice President of Student Services at Adelphi University, Angelo B. Proto '70.
The Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1961 to honor those athletes, coaches and friends who have distinguished themselves during their time at the university and thereafter. The evening begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
