Louisville, Ky. - A exceptional first month of the year for
Courtney Wengryn and
Lindsey Hibbs has them earning inclusion on the 2023 NFCA/Tucci Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Already an NFCA Division II National Player of the Week this season, Wengryn aims to become Adelphi's first .400 hitter since three-time NFCA All-American
Brenna Martini accomplished the feat in 2017.
As it stands, Wengryn's .441 average would stand among the Top 5 season hitting leaders in Adelphi's history, joining the likes of former standouts and Hall of Famers
Danielle Margarita and
Emily Dorko.
Wengryn's power numbers have only begun to climb in her second full season, with a team-leading four homers and 21 RBis to her credit. She also has multiple hits in ten of her first 21 games this year.
Hibbs has not disappointed off her All-America season. The budding star of the Adelphi pitching staff has continued to stay the course.
With three no-hitters on her tab thus far in 2023, Hibbs has managed a 10-2 record with a startling 152 strikeouts and a minuscule 0.69 earned-run average.
Not only is she nearly halfway to
Julie Bolduc's single-season strikeout record, Hibbs leads all of NCAA Division II with a 19.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and an average of 13.1 strikeouts per seven innings.
A three-time NE10 Pitcher of the Week in 2023, Hibbs has tallied double-digit strikeouts in nine of her 11 starts, including a near-Division II record 20-strikeout performance in achieving perfection at UNC Pembroke back in February.
The NFCA Player and Pitcher of the Year hopefuls will travel with the Panthers to Waltham, Mass. next for an 11 a.m. doubleheader against Bentley University on Friday (Mar. 31).
