Westfield, Mass. -
For the first time in school history, Adelphi University has an individual Northeast-10 Conference cross country champion, and her name is
Katherine Marsh.
The graduate student ran a career-best and school record 21:38.1 6k time Sunday to top the leaderboard at the league meet, finishing first just over nine seconds ahead of her sister
Isabel Marsh (21:47.00) and 18.5 seconds ahead of third-place Tess Drury from Saint Michael's College (21:56.60).
Both Marsh twins' times were, in fact, than the previous AU women's record in the 6k, ran by Danielle Matteo in 2009. The effort landed both on the All-NE10 First Team.
In all, the championships were a banner effort for the AU cross country team collectively. The Adelphi women finished runner-up to Southern Connecticut State University by a total of 11 points, while the men placed third, an all-time best, behind SCSU and Franklin Pierce University.
The combined finish marked Adelphi's best overall placing in its history at the NE10 Cross Country Championships dating back to joining the league in the 2009-10 academic year. The women were tabbed third in the preseason poll, while the men significantly out-performed their preseason selection of ninth.
Elsewhere,
Sumaira Mayan ran the 6k course in 22:56.20 to finish eighth, and
Lucia Kutner's time of 24:21.9 placed her just outside the Top 25 in 26th. All nine of the Adelphi women who race the race clocked in personal best times, and the 'Cats' top man also logged a PR.
Jake Orfano was AU's top finisher in 18th in 26:18.10, five seconds faster than the time he clocked last week at the Bruce Kirsch Cup. Rounding out the Brown and Gold's top-three,
Nicholas Nanan and
Diego Llanos finished within four seconds of each other in 22nd and 24th, respectively.
With the conference meet now in the books, the Brown and Gold will next race in the regional meet to determine who among them will qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships. The regional meet will be hosted by Franklin Pierce in Hopkinton, N.H., at the same course at which the Bruce Kirsch Cup is held, on Nov. 4.
