Staten Island, N.Y. - Highlighted with impressive times from first year students, the Adelphi University track and field team returned to action this weekend at the Spartan Regional Preview, hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday.

Newcomers wasted no time getting in on the action after participating in just one indoor meet before the holiday break, as Sumaira Mayan clocked a personal best in the 1000m event, placing fifth overall in a time of 3:16.22. Fellow freshman Amari Johnson shaved off .15 seconds from her last outing in the 200m to place 10th overall in the field for a new career-time.

Off the track and onto the field, Callie Wiedle jumped .05m farther in her second outing for the Panthers for a new personal record of 1.50m landing her seventh overall at the Invite.

From the returners on the women's side, Gabrielle Buissereth finished first in the 400m race, clocking in at 58.00 - which stands just three seconds slower than her all-time collegiate best (55.17) but ranks first in the Northeast-10 Conference after this weekend's meets. She also had a hand in helping the 4x400 earn the top spot as she teamed up with Gabrielle Griffin, Isabel Marsh and Alexis Roth to race to a time of 4:03.13.

I. Marsh crossed the finish line first in the 500m event in a time of 1:20.37 which stands as a new personal best. Claire O'Regan came back with a second place finish in the 200m race and a new personal best time in the 60m dash at 8.13 to land in the top-10 for all competitors. Her time in the 200, ranks fourth after Saturday's meets in the NE10.

On the men's side, Christopher Holt ran his first 60m dash in a Panther uniform, breaking the tape in 7.20 seconds, which placed him seventh in the field. Teammates Carl Bacette and Marvin Hodge followed close behind, just .02 and .03 seconds later.

Holt also took home a fourth place finish in the 200m, the first time ever competing in the specialty in college and sits fifth in the NE10 with his time of 22.75. Also running a personal best at the Spartan Invite was John Perez who trails Holt three spots to sit at no. 8 amongst conference competitors.

Christian Bien-Aime clocked in at 2:44.57 to place 5th in the field, in his first time running the 1000 indoors. Also in extended meter events, Diego Llanos took second in the 3000m in a time of 8:56.54, landing him just inside the top-10 this season amongst the NE10.

Leaving the banked track for some field action, Matthew Wenz cleared 1.83m on the second try for a new personal best and putting him first on the all-time freshman leaderboard. He also sits at no. 8 in the conference for his height cleared this weekend. Andre Francis threw for 13.42m in the weight throw to solidify his spot at no. 1 for Adelphi's all-time freshman list.

The Panthers will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 21 at Ramapo College.
