Men's Soccer Falls at No. 1 Southern New Hampshire, 3-1

The Panthers' lone goal came on a penalty kick late in the first half.

Box Score
Manchester, N.H. - After the Adelphi University men's soccer team held the No. 1 team in the nation and defending NCAA champions scoreless for the first 20 minutes, but eventually conceded three goals to fall to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Saturday.

Both teams were evenly matched over the first 20 minutes, with the only shot for either side coming off of the foot of Southern New Hampshire's Jose Seoane just over two minutes into the contest. His attempt missed high, and neither team would get close to the cage until Kenny Doublette found a streaking Miguel Carniero who proceeded to beat Sergio Reyes and give the Penmen (7-0, 4-0 NE-10) a 1-0 lead. The Panthers (4-3, 2-2 NE-10) were stimied by the Southern New Hampshire defense, as the Brown and Gold did not manage a single shot in the first half.

As time expired in the first half, the Penmen doubled their lead at the 43:30 mark. Sebastian Stezewski tallied his third goal of the season as he took a pass from Brian Grisell and beat Reyes to his left to send the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Just 49 seconds into the second frame, the Brown and Gold got on the board and cut into the hosts' lead. The Penmen were called on a foul in the penalty box, and Diego Zuniga converted on the opportunity for his fifth goal of the season. From there, the Panthers took six total shots in the second half as they sought to tie the game, but were unable to net the equalizer. Caelan Huber and Zuniga took two shots less than two minutes apart late in the half, but each was met by keeper Dom DiMaggio for his only saves of the contest. To his credit, Ahmad Salamah stopped two more Penmen attempts as he manned the pipes for Adelphi in the second half.

With less than two minutes to play, however, the Penmen put the game on ice when Jonathan Lupinelli converted on the second penalty kick of the game, and first for the hosts, to give the defending national champions a 3-1 win.

The Penmen led in total shots by a 17-7 margin, and also led 7-2 in total corner kicks. The Panthers did not have a corner kick opportunity in the second half.

The Brown and Gold returns to action on Tuesday, September 30, when they head upstate to take on the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose at 6 p.m.
