Megaloudis Earns First Win as Men's Soccer Takes Down Monroe, 3-1

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's soccer team played host to Monroe on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Mustangs 3-1 and earning the program's first win in the Chris Megaloudis era.

Series History:

  • This was the first-ever matchup between Adelphi (1-2-1, 0-0-0 NE10) and newly minted Division II Monroe.

Highlights:

  • Tyler Dwyer scored his first career goal in the eighth minute to put Adelphi in front.
  • Zain Sutterwalla netted his first career brace, scoring in the 29th and 44th minutes.
  • Enrico Cesarini Sforza assisted on all three Panther goals.
  • Maximilian Mann made his first collegiate start.
  • Marcelo Huntley made his collegiate debut.

How It Happened:

  • Monroe tallied the first shot of the match, but it was Adelphi that lit up the scoreboard.
  • In the eighth minute, a ball crossed into the box was popped out to the top by Cesarini Sforza to Dwyer. Without taking a touch, the grad student sent a shot into the lower-left corner and past the keeper for an Adelphi lead.
  • The Panthers kept the pressure on and, in the 29th minute, put some fresh legs onto the field.
  • In the game for just 14 seconds, Sutterwalla was led to goal after a perfect pass from Cesarini Sforza, and the junior delivered his team's second goal of the game.
  • Adelphi continued to pressure Monroe's backline and once again broke through when Cesarini Sforza found Sutterwalla for a second time in less than 15 minutes.
  • The Panthers went into the locker room on a high note, leading by three.
  • Monroe upped the pressure on Adelphi's defense in the second half, holding most of the possession and outshooting the Panthers 11-2.
  • The Mustangs finally came through in the 65th minute after Andrea Farinella was screened on a free kick and the ball found the back of the net.
  • Monroe continued to pepper the Panther defense with chances and earned five corner kicks in the last 15 minutes, but the Adelphi defense stood tall and never gave the Mustangs any real looks.
  • The whistle blew in the 90th minute with the Panthers on top 3-1.

Up Next:

  • The Adelphi men's soccer team will be back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. when they take on Molloy in Rockville Centre.
