New Haven, CT – Earlier this evening, the men's basketball team took on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on the road in their regular season finale. The Panthers fell victim to a 14 point deficit in the first and were unable to get back to within striking distance, eventually falling by a score of 70-57. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 14-14, 11-11 NE-10 and secure the #7 seed in the conference tournament while Southern Connecticut advances to 17-10, 14-8 NE-10 to secure the #5 seed.
John Calarco was the Panther's high scorer with 19 points, courtesy of a 6-11 performance from the field including three triples. Eight other players scored including
Chris Ranglin and
Anthony Libroia, each of whom chipped in with seven points each. Adelphi struggled from the field, shooting just .375 on 21-56 from the floor and sunk just four of 15 attempts from behind the arc.
Trevon Hamlet posted a game high 22 points for the Owls and led four other players in double digit scoring. Deshawn Murphy added 13 points while Luke Houston did his part with 12. Rashamell Vereen and Tylon Smith rounded out the scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively. Southern Connecticut won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Panthers 24-21.
The Panthers got off to a slow start, missing four of their first five attempts from the field, allowing the hosts to go up 10-2 within the opening 3:09. A triple by Calarco and a layup from Ranglin made the playing field level at 12 all at the 9:57 mark.
However, after the Brown and Gold missed eight of their following nine field goal attempts which opened the door for a crippling 15-2 Owl run spanning 5:53 to set the score at 27-14 in favor of the hosts. Two late Hamlet free throws gave the Owls a 14 point advantage at the half, 34-20.
In the second, Adelphi was unable to pull within striking distance and fell behind by as much as 16 points through the first 8:02.
Nayquann Mitchell and
Chris Ranglin made back to back layups cutting the deficit to 12, but it's as close as they would get. Southern Connecticut put enough distance between them and Adelphi to close out the game with a 13 point cushion.
The Panthers are back in action on Friday evening, March 1 when they host the #10 Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for a 7:30pm start.
