Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to the Falcons of Bentley University in a Northeast-10 contest on Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sports. The Panthers held a slim one-point advantage at halftime and then outscored the visitors by six in the second to secure a 72-65 win. The victory marks the Panthers' sixth win in seven games which improves their record to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the NE-10 while Bentley falls to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Four Panthers scored double figures and were led by senior
Travis Jordan who posted a career high of 15 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and a 3-4 night from behind the arc. Freshman
Anthony Libroia added 13 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor with two triples to go along with his eight rebounds while
Bradley Simpson chipped in 12 points and six boards.
Ryan DeNicola also had a collegiate high, recording 10 points, three boards and two blocks in 16 minutes of action.
For Bentley, Jasper Grassa led all scorers with 22 points; 12 of which came from downtown. Teammate JP Koury added 16 points while Tyler McFarland did his part with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers fell behind from the get-go, watching a five point deficit grow into a 10 point hole through the opening 11 minutes of the half. However, they turned the tables after
Duane Morgan picked off McFarland which led to a Calaro triple to pull within seven. Efforts from Jordan, DeNicola and Libroia resulted in the Brown and Gold going up by four with 6:36 left in the half.
From the 5:08 mark, each side went cold, missing a combined 11 shots until Grassa sunk the final jumper of the half to make it a one point game at the half with the Panthers holding the 30-29 upperhand.
For the first eight minutes of the second, the Panthers could not get ahead by more than five points until two made attempts from the charity stripe by Jordan gave his squad the push they needed for the extra go-ahead. Over the ensuing seven minutes, Adelphi's cushion blossomed to as much as 13 points courtesy of a 7-1 run capped by a Simpson jumper.
Bentley did not go away quietly despite the 13 point gap. The visitors managed to chop the difference down to five with 2:30 left, but the Panthers sunk 9-12 at the line over the final 1:16 to put the nail in the coffin.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, January 26
th when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a 3:30 pm NE-10 contest against the Penmen.
