Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team completed the sweep of a three game series with American International College by taking both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader, 5-0 and 17-12, at William J. Bonomo Field on Saturday. The Panthers knocked a combined 28 hits between the two games, improving to 19-17 overall and 8-5 in the division, and the Yellow Jackets slipped to 12-22-1 overall and 1-11-1 in the Southwest.
For the Panthers, freshman
Donato Signore continued his torrid streak at the plate, going 5-10 on the day with a triple, four runs scored and three RBI.
Richard Mejia and
Craig Matteo each had four hits, with Mejia going 4-5 with a double in game two and Matteo scoring four times and driving in a pair. Senior
Justin Farnum went 3-8 on the day and blasted a three-run homer in the first inning of game two, and freshman
Nick Zito went 3-6 in the nightcap with three runs and two RBI.
Chad Houghton picked up three hits including a double and two RBI in game two, while
Anthony Zarrella singled, doubled and scored twice.
Adelphi scored three runs in the first inning of the opener and managed to hold on for the win despite going hitless for the next five innings. After Matteo and Farnum drove in runs in the first, the Panthers did not have a runner reach base until
Rich Cambria drew a two-out walk in the seventh and scored on a
Vinny Gaetano base hit.
Dillon McNamara earned the win on the mound in 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just four hits and striking out four.
James McCormack threw an inning of scoreless relief, and
Matt Abramowitz went 1.1 spotless innings and fanned a pair.
For the Yellow Jackets, Matt Lee settled in after the three-run first and cruised through the next five innings. Lee struck out seven and at one point retired 17 straight batters before running into trouble in the seventh.
The game two slugfest featured a combined 29 runs, 38 hits, 13 extra base hits and saw scoring in every inning except the fourth and ninth. Every Adelphi starter registered a hit and eight out of nine starters drove in a run, with Signore and Farnum each collecting three RBI.
Farnum put the Panthers on the board early with a three-run dinger, but AIC scored four runs on four hits in the second to take a 4-3 lead. Adelphi answered back with three runs in each of the next two frames, and the Panthers found themselves in front 9-7 after three innings of high-powered offense. Three RBI singles and a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth made it 14-8 in favor of the Panthers, and another three runs in the seventh sealed it as the Yellow Jackets could not muster a rally against the Adelphi bullpen.
Jeff Andersen secured the victory out of the bullpen and allowed just one earned run in three innings after taking the hill in the third. Senior
Chris Murphy ate up 3.2 innings and blunted the AIC attack, surrendering just two hits for one run and striking out three.
The Panthers look to continue their NE-10 Southwest win streak when they travel to Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. game.
