Baseball Rallies for 9-6 Win Over Pace

Panthers earn third NE-10 Southwest victory thanks to four-run eighth inning comeback

Richard Mejia led the Panthers with three hits in their come-from-behind win over Pace University on Wednesday.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball used a four-run eighth inning outburst to earn a 9-6 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at William J. Bonomo Field on Wednesday. The Panthers improve to 13-15 overall and 3-3 in the division, while the Setters now stand at 16-14 overall and 5-1 in the Southwest.

For Adelphi, Richard Mejia paced the offense with three base hits and a pair of RBI. Jamie Liebowitz, Justin Farnum and Dustin Signore each knocked two hits, while Craig Matteo drew the game-tying bases loaded hit-by-pitch and Anthony Zarrella worked a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to plate the winning run.

Matt Abramowitz picked up the win on the mound in relief, tossing 2.2 flawless innings with two strikeouts. Michael Carletti started on the hill, went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

Neither club could get the bats going until Mejia came across in the bottom of the fourth on a double play ball on the infield, but Pace quickly snatched the lead with a three-run fifth capped by Joe Lombardi's two-run double. The Setters grabbed two more the next inning, but the Panthers answered back immediately and tied the game at 5-5 on Farnum's RBI single.

Pace snuck out to a 6-5 lead in the seventh, but a four-run eighth put Adelphi back in front for good. Signore poked a one-out single, and an error and a walk loaded the bases with two away. Matteo wore a pitch to force in a run and tie the game, Zarrella walked to claim a 7-6 lead, and Mejia put the game away with two-run single up the middle.

The Panthers head to Assumption College on Saturday for an NE-10 doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
