Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team knocked 13 hits in the last game of a season-opening five-game homestand, beating Nyack College 12-3 in non-league action at William J. Bonomo Field on Tuesday. The Panthers got five multiple-hit performances to help lift them to 4-1 on the season, while the Warriors of Nyack slipped to 3-2 with the loss.
In a game that saw a combined 12 pitchers take the mound, Adelphi received quality innings from starter
Jeff Andersen, who tossed three innings of no-hit baseball in his first appearance on the season. Andersen struck out five batters, including four of the first five he faced, and was relieved by
John Donnelly in the third, who promptly struck out three batters in one inning of work.
Mike Cranston took the hill in the fourth and kept the Nyack hitters at bay long enough to get tagged with the win, while
Chris Murphy,
Chris Pabisch and
Matt Abramowitz combined to throw 3.2 innings of shutout baseball.
At the plate, freshman
Vincent Sharkey kept his hot start to the 2012 season alive with a 3-4 performance that featured a triple and three runs scored. Senior
Craig Matteo went 3-4, scored three times and roped a double, while junior
Anthony Zarrella and freshmen
Tyler Barrett and Donatto Signore had two hits and drove in runs apiece.
The Panthers used three multiple-run innings to claim the authoritative win. Sharkey led off a four-run third inning with a opposite field triple, and Zarrella delivered a two-run single just inside the first base bag. Barrett capped the six-hit inning with a long double to left center that plate Zarrella and gave Adelphi a 5-0 lead.
Nyack tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but the Panther bats refused to let the visitors get back in the game. Sharkey began the bottom of the sixth with a base hit, moved to third on a Matteo double and scored after a wild pitch rolled to the backstop. An intentional walk to Zarrella put runners at first and second with two outs, but sophomore
Richard Mejia made the Warriors pay with a frozen rope double to left field that brought home two more runs.
Adelphi assembled another big inning in the eighth, adding plenty of insurance via four runs on a hit, an error, a hit batter, two walks and a two-run single by Donato. A nine run cushion was more than enough for Abramowitz, who put Nyack away in order in the ninth.
The Panthers head south to Florida for six games, beginning with Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana.
