Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier tonight, the #2 seeded men's basketball team hosted the #3 seeded Skyhawks of Stonehill College in the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Tournament. The Panthers fell behind in the late stages of the first half and could not find their stroke from the floor. Stonehill knocked down 12 three pointers in the game and kept the home team at bay as the Panthers fell by a score of 73-60. With the loss, Adelphi moves to 20-8 while Stonehill reaches the 20-win summit with a 20-8 record as they move on to the Northeast-10 Championship.
Cliff Brown was the high scorer for Adelphi with 15 points on an efficient 5-6 shooting from the field and a 4-4 performance from the charity stripe.
Chris Ranglin posted 12 points and had a team high nine rebounds while
Bradley Simpson also added 12 points on 6-7 shooting to go along with his eight boards.
Richard Harkins tallied 11 points, dished out six assists and had two steals in the loss.
For the Skyhawks, Andre Tongo was the game high scorer with 27 points on 9-14 shooting including a 5-8 performance from beyond the arc. Adam Fazzini netted 15 points, 12 of which came from three balls while Jack Cole made his presence felt down low, grabbing 10 misses and blocking six shots. Brian Hamor was credited with a game high eight assists.
Courtesy of 50 percent shooting from the three point line, Stonehill's eight first half threes powered them through. Meanwhile, Harkins' knocked down the only triple of the half out of seven attempts.
Adelphi got out to an 11-5 start over the first 6:02, highlighted by a dunk from Ranglin and
Duane Morgan. Stonehill turned the tables, using a 7-0 run with five points coming from the stroke of Tongo to earn their first lead of the contest.
With 1:31 remaining in the first act, Tongo's three pointer made it a nine point Skyhawk lead. A Simpson layup and two foul line makes from Brown made it a 35-30 game by halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers could not get shots to fall, shooting just 9-30 from the field and 3-12 from three point land. Conversely, Stonehill made 48 percent of their tries from the floor.
A five point deficit gradually expanded to 13 at the 11:45 mark. As time wound down, Adelphi saw their third trip to the NE-10 Championship start to slip away, falling behind by as much as 16 points on two occasions.
Despite making five of their final 12 shots, Stonehill stood strong and did not waiver, continuing to hold a double digit lead through the end.
Adelphi will now wait for the NCAA to release the brackets for the national tournament. Currently, the Panthers are ranked #2 in the East Region.
