Garden City, N.Y. – The men's basketball team played host to the Setters of Pace University earlier tonight in a Northeast-10 Conference Contest. After enjoying a seven point lead at the half, Pace rallied to pull within two in the latter stages of the game, but Adelphi hung tough and held off the late charge. When all was said and done, the Panthers came away with a 56-50 win to move their record to 18-6, 15-5 NE-10 while Pace slips to 13-11, 11-9 NE-10.
Chris Ranglin led the way for the Panthers with 14 points and three steals while
Bradley Simpson added 13 points on a very efficient 6-7 shooting from the field to go along with his seven boards.
Robert Johnson struggled from the field, notching just seven points, but did his part with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
John Calarco added seven points while
Cliff Brown totaled six to go along with seven rebounds.
Richard Harkins had five points and four assists on the night.
For Pace, Kevin Clark was the team's high scorer with 12 points while Keon Williams posted a double-double with 11 points and as many rebounds. Jonathan Merceus added seven points while Kai Smith, Justin Alston and Denzel Primus-Devonish all chipped in with six points apiece.
Adelphi shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half and made 5-6 free throw attempts which enabled them to take the lead early on and extend it to as much as 11. However, Pace hung tough and thanks to a solid effort at the foul line, connecting on nine of 11 attempts, six of which came off the fingers of Clark, they closed the gap to four 46 with seconds left in the half. However, a late Johnson layup allowed the Panthers to hit the locker room with a six point cushion.
A three ball from Johnson and a layup from Simpson to open the final act pushed the lead to 11 just two minutes in. However, it would slowly diminish as the Panthers struggled from the field, making just seven field goals on 23 tries. Pace would use a 9-0 run beginning at the 15:45 mark and extending 5:13 to tie the game at 40 after a made free throw by Williams.
Just two minutes later, Williams would tie the game a second and final time on his two makes from the charity stripe. Calarco was successful on both attempts after he was sent to the line, but for the ensuing 2:35, either team failed to make a bucket, going a combine 0-6. Ranglin broke the silence with a big three pointer with 5:32 remaining to give Adelphi a 47-42 lead. Another Williams free throw and a Smith layup kept the Setters within reach, pulling within a bucket.
However, it would be as close as they would get. Five Panther free throws and two made field goals sealed the deal as time wound down in favor of Adelphi.
The hoopsters return to the court on Saturday, February 18 when they travel to Syracuse, New York to take on the Dolphins of Le Moyne College in their final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for a 3pm start. Check the men's basketball schedule for links to live stats and video.
