Men's Basketball Falls to SCSU, 64-54

Box Score Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi men's basketball team opened conference action against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University at the Center for Recreation and Sports Tuesday evening. The Panthers trailed by six at the half, and despite taking a lead midway through the second, the Owls proved too strong down the stretch and came away with a 64-54 win. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-2 and 0-1 in the NE-10 while the Owls improve to 3-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

The Panthers shot out to an early 8-3 lead courtesy of back-to-back three pointers from John Calarco and Anthony Libroia and a pair of free throws from Bradley Simpson. Libroia added another three, minutes later to lengthen the Panther lead 11-5. The Panthers' advantage would stretch to seven at two opportunities in the half; a layup from DeNicola gave the Panthers a 20-13 lead at the seven minute mark, and Duane Morgan drained two free throws to up the score to 22-15 with six minutes remaining.

However, in the final minutes, the Owls outscored the Brown and Gold 15-2 to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. Greg Langston scored nine of the 15 points for the visiting squad and had 20 total points in the half to lead the Owls. Eleven of those points came off of free throws, as the Panthers committed 13 fouls in the half.

In the opening two minutes of the second half, Libroia dialed up another three and RJ Samuels popped in a layup to cut the deficit to a point, 30-29. Adelphi quickly reclaimed the lead on a pair a free throws from Calarco while adding  a jumper moments later to bring the Panther lead to 33-30. The Owls would score 10 of the next 13 points to lead 40-36 at the 11 minute mark, but a three-pointer from Calarco cut the gap to 40-39.

The Owls would continue to lead throughout the remainder of the second half, and lengthened their lead to 48-43 with eight minutes remaining. Simpson converted on a three-point play to cut the deficit to 48-46, but the Owls put together a 4-0 spurt to extend their lead, 52-46. The Owls' lead would swell to 11 with three minutes remaining, and the visitors would eventually prevail 64-54.

The Panthers had three players in double figures, with Calarco and Simpson both scoring 14 points, and the latter recording a double-double, adding 13 rebounds. Libroia added 11 points for the Panthers. The Owls were led by a double-double for Greg Langston, who scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Panthers return to the court at the Center for Recreation and Sports on Tuesday, November 20th for an NE-10 matchup against the University of New Haven. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
