Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier tonight, the men's basketball team hosted the Chargers of the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 conference contest. Adelphi got off to a slow start but turned things up midway through the first half, heading into halftime with an eight point cushion. A 15 point advantage slowly turned into a two point deficit with just 1:21 left, but solid defense powered the Panthers in the final moments of the game, allowing them to take the 64-61 win. In victory, Adelphi advances to 15-5, 12-4 in NE-10 play while UNH moves to 13-7, 9-7 NE-10.

Robert Johnson led Adelphi with 12 points with Chris Ranglin adding 11 points and seven boards while Richard Harkins also totaled 11 points to compliment his five assists on the night. Travis Jordan and John Calarco did their part with eight points apiece while Norron McDonald had seven points in 20 minutes of action.

For the Chargers, Justin Exum was the game high scorer with 16 points. Jeffery Adkins Jr. and Jeremy Williams followed his lead with 10 points each with Eric Anderson earning nine.

Adelphi came out ice cold in the opening seven minutes, being held scoreless as they missed on their first six shots. Additionally, they turned the ball over four times while allowing UNH to go 4-6 from the field with all four shots coming from behind the arc.

Head Coach Dom Savino burned two 30 second time outs to regroup and get his squad back on track. Finally, at the 12:47 mark, McDonald broke the scoreless drought with a bucket from inside the paint. Over the next four minutes, the Panthers pulled even with their counterparts at 12 all.

The Panthers went on to sink 10 of their final 14 shots of the half which included going 5-8 from three point land. Combine with a strong defensive front that held UNH scoreless in the final 2:57, they managed to turn a 12 point deficit to an eight point lead as they were up 31-23 at halftime.
Adelphi continued to impress with an opening trey by Johnson to extend the lead to 13. At 15:25, another three ball by Jordan gave his team a 15 point advantage, their largest of the game.

Slowly, the Chargers began to come back, eventually pulling within six with 3:25 left to play. Two back to back buckets by Anderson made it a two point game. Exum was fouled from behind the arc, but made good on the attempt and sunk the free throw for a successful four point conversion which gave UNH a two point lead.

Ranglin answered by draining a long three to retake the lead with 1:06 left to play. With Williams in possession of the ball, UNH took their time to set up their offensive attack, but a timely steal by Johnson, who was fouled and sent to the line for a one and one, seemingly put the game away. Johnson, who is the NE-10's second best free throw shooter, missed his mark. However, Simpson came up with a huge offensive board. Fouled on the play, Simpson sunk his two attempts to ice the game, 64-61.

Adelphi hits the hardwood in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday, February 4 when they visit American International College in a NE-10 contest. Tipoff is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start. Watch the game live here or follow along with live stats that can be found here.
