Pleasantville, N.Y. - The men's basketball team took on the Setters of Pace University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest earlier tonight. Riding the momentum of a five game win streak heading into the game, the Panthers took the lead early on and never looked back despite the Setters staying within striking distance and coming away with a 57-52 victory. With the win, Adelphi extends their winning streak to six and advances their record to 6-1, 5-1 NE-10 while Pace levels out at 4-4, 3-3 NE-10.
As a team, Adelphi only shot 38 percent from the field and connected on just 4-16 from behind the arc, but the duo of
Robert Johnson and
Bradley Simpson combine for 31 points and 11 rebounds on the night and powered the Panthers toward victory.
It was a slow start for both teams, but after a combine five missed shots between each side, the Panthers got on the board first with a layup by Simpson. In the opening 5:57, Adelphi led just 8-2 and then was up just 10-8 at the halfway mark of the opening act. Proving to be a low scoring affair,
John Calarco knocked down a trifecta in the final six seconds to send his team into halftime with a six point cushion with the scoreboard reading 26-20.
Opening the second frame, Simpson connected on one of two attempts from the charity stripe, but Pace's Keon Williams responded with a layup to cut the lead to five. The ensuing three minutes were scoreless on both ends of the spectrum until
Chris Ranglin sunk two free throws to break the silence.
Johnson sunk a three ball on a feed from
Richard Harkins and then came back with a layup with assistance from
John Calarco to give Adelphi their largest lead of the game, 43-33 at the 7:55 mark.
Pace fired back with a 14-3 run over the next 4:55 to tie the game at 47 apiece. With just under a minute to play, Brown came up big and landed a trey to put the Panthers up by three. On the next possession, Pace attempted three straight shots from behind the arc, but came up empty on all tries. With time expiring, Johnson was successful on four shots from the charity stripe to seal the deal.
The Panthers return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 10 when they host Le Moyne in a NE-10 matchup at the Center for Recreation and Sport. Tip off is slated for a 3:30 pm start.
