Springfield, Mass. – David Akinyooye, a 2011 Adelphi University graduate and standout player for the men's basketball team, has signed a professional contract to play for the Springfield Armor of the National Basketball Association Developmental League. The Armor, the D-League affiliate of the New Jersey Nets, held its tryout camp earlier in November and announced its regular season roster on November 23.
Akinyooye proved essential to the Panthers' Northeast-10 Conference Championship run during the 2010-11 season. The 6-foot-6 guard from Elmont, N.Y., garnered a host of awards in his final season, including NE-10 All-Conference Third Team, NE-10 All-Tournament Team and All-Met Division II First Team.
A product of Elmont Memorial High School, Akinyooye ranked second on the team in 2011 with 13.1 points per game, led the squad with 8.5 rebounds per game and swatted a team-best 34 blocks. He elevated his game to another level during the 2011 postseason, scoring 18 points in an NE-10 Quarterfinal win over American International College and 15 points against UMass Lowell to send Adelphi to the NE-10 Finals.
Akinyooye joins a cast of four former Adelphi men's basketball players to play professionally: Kendell Craig (France), Ryan McCormack (Italy), Wayne Nelson and James Samuels (Portugal).
The Springfield Armor begins its season on Friday, December 2, against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at the Mass Mutual Center at 7 p.m.
