Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier tonight, the men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season in their home opener against cross town rivals, Dowling College. After a slow moving first half, the Panthers picked up the pace on offense while managing to keep the Golden Lions in check on the strength of five steals and 17 turnovers by their counterparts. When all was said and done, Adelphi earned the 54-38 victory to even out their record at 1-1, 1-0 NE-10 while Dowling slips to 0-2.
John Calarco was the go-to man in the first half, picking up nine points on 4-9 shooting from the field while also leading his team in rebounds witn four. The Panthers struggled to get on the board with four straight missed attempts at the hoop to open up the first act, but Calarco finally broke the silence at the 16:39 mark on a layup to give his team a jump start.
Dowling led by two just over seven minutes in, but a
Richard Harkins layup sparked a 10-0 Panther run with scoring spread out between four players. At 8:04, Dowling was down by six and would cut the deficit in half, but it's as close as they would get as they headed into the locker room down 23-16 at the half.
Opening up the second half, on a feed from
Bradley Simpson,
Duane Morgan penetrated into the key and slammed home a dunk to spark an 18-10 run to put Dowling into a 15 point deficit. With their offense heating up and their defense holding strong, the Panther lead would eventually grow to as much as 19 points as they worked on putting the game out of reach.
Cliff Brown connected on one of two attemps from behind the arc, with the made three ball coming with 3:26 left in the game to keep the lead steady at 17.
Chris Ranglin, after having a quite and scoreless first half, came alive with an 11 point performance including a 4-4 effort from the free throw line.
The Panthers were unphased at the charity stripe, connecting on 13 of 13 while posting a field goal percentage of 34.6 in both halves with an identical 9-26 shooting in each frame. Brown chipped in with seven points and five rebounds while Morgan added seven points and Harkins with nine. Adelphi outrebounded their opponents 37-22 with 12 offensive and 25 defensive boards.
The Panthers hit the hardwood on Wednesday, November 22 when they head back to New Haven, Connecticut to take on the Chargers of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip off is slated for a 7:30 pm start.
