Garden City, N.Y. — After a 70-59 victory over New Haven on Tuesday night, the Adelphi men's basketball team officially wrapped a historic regular season.
The Panthers currently hold a record of 25-6, 17-3 NE10 and earned their first Northeast-10 regular season title since the 2011-12 season. The team's 25 wins are head coach Dave Duke's most in a single season and are the fourth most in program history. Adelphi held a 12-game win streak, the fifth longest in its history, that spanned from December 1 to January 22.
Jarnel Rancy broke the Panther single-season record for blocks in the win over New Haven, recording his 112th of the campaign. This number has Rancy leading all NCAA divisions in the category, with no other player tallying over 100.
The three leading scorers for the 'Cats were all tightly packed together as Andres Fulgencio (14.5 ppg), Dayshaun Walton (13.7 ppg) and Tavin Pierre Philippe (13.1 ppg) led the way.
Fulgencio was the conference's leading three-point shooter, shooting 40.5% from beyond the arc while Walton was the second most efficient player from the free throw stripe, making 89% of his attempts.
Led by Rancy and Mason Jackson, the Panther defense was the second best in the NE10, only allowing their opponents to score 67.5 points per game and holding them to 47.1% shooting from the floor. Adelphi had the best three point defense as opponents shot only 38.8% from deep.
The 'Cats hold a bye into the quarterfinal round of the NE10 Tournament and will take on the winner of #8 New Haven and #9 Saint Michael's on Sunday at 1:30 PM in the CRS. Adelphi swept both the Chargers and the Purple Knights in the 24-25 season, averaging 82.5 points in those victories.
The previous tournament champion, Southern New Hampshire, is slotted into the two seed, followed by #3 Bentley, #4 Assumption and #5 Pace.
Games for all rounds of the NE10 Basketball Championship will be available on NE10 NOW on FloCollege. Admission for all rounds of the championship is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth, and free for all NE10 students with a valid ID.
