New Haven, Connecticut - The Adelphi men's track and field program finished up their championship season with a fifth place showing at the 2024 Northeast-10 Outdoor Championship meet over the weekend.
Matthew Wenz earned his first gold medal for the decathlon, totaling 5,570 points with two first place finishes in the high jump (1.83m) and 400 (52.66). He put together personal bests in the 110 hurdles (16.27) and the 1500 (5:08.05) to sit atop the field. Teammate and first year
Sergio Talamo, who was second after day one, finished just outside the podium in fourth, with a total of 4,981 points. He placed first in the long jump (6.51m) and 110 hurdles (16.12) while posting career-best marks in every event besides the pole vault.
Also reaching the podium for the men were
David Williams and
Bryan Combary as the duo went 2-3 in the 110 hurdles and both achieved NCAA Divison II provisional marks in the finals.
Jake Orfano went 32:23.13 in the men's 10,000 for a new personal best time and a fourth place showing to earn points for the Panther squad.
In the field,
Khalil Chester's leap of 7.14m was a new career-best in the outdoor season and placed him second overall, earning silver.
Two of the team's three relay groups also earned medals as the men's 4x100 of
Carl Bacetter, Williams, Chester and Combary clocked in at 41.91 to earn bronze. The men's 4x800 improved one spot from the indoor season, using a time of 8:00.44 to take silver. The quartet
Dylan Norrby, Chris Bien-Aime,
Jack Coyne and
Nicholas Nanan ran five seconds faster than the crew from Southern Connecticut and just behind the winners from Franklin Pierce.
