Track & Field Sets Tone at 28th Annual Monmouth Season Opener

West Long Branch, NJ - After opening the season at the Fred Hardy Invitational, the whole Adelphi University Track & Field program went to the 28th Annual Monmouth Season Opener over the weekend. 

Highlighted by several top-10 finishes, both the men and women set the tone for the early part of the outdoor season. 

For the relays, Adelphi's 'A' group of Chuck Nwankwo, David Williams, Khalil Chester and Bryan Combary clocked in at 42.97 for the 4x100 to place fourth as the women took fifth in a time of 48.46. The quartet of Amari Johnson, Claire O'Regan, Valencia Beaubrun and Christina Gayle finished .01 second shy of last year's bronze medal finish at the outdoor Northeast-10 Conference Championship (48.45). 

In the 400, Isabel Marsh and Carly Koprowski placed third and seventh, respectively with times of 58.61 and 1:00.22. O'Regan followed closely behind, taking 10th in a time of 1:00.66. 

Katherine Marsh's time in the 1500 stands as the best in the region after the second weekend of action - 4:36.12 is three seconds faster than the next competitor and just five seconds from an NCAA qualifying mark (4:31.00). 

Lindsey Wilson's height of 1.55 earned her third place in the high jump which is a career-best for the rookie in the outdoor campaign. Also placing in the top-10 for her respective event was Maeve Duggan who tossed the shotput 10.25m, which is .65 meters from her collegiate best. 

On the men's side, John Perez topped his section in the 200 in a time of 22.34 to place eighth overall in a field of 50. Chris Leonard put a career-best time together for the 5000, racing to a ninth place showing in 15:55.67. 

Falling just outside the top-10 overall, Andre Francis placed 11th in the hammer with a launch of 46.10 meters. 

The team competes next at the Wilton Wright Invite hosted by Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, April  6.
