Garden City, N.Y.- Men's Basketball's Ronnie Silva and Softball's Courtney Wengryn were presented the male and female Panther Leadership Awards at this year's athletics department end of year awards ceremony, held Monday, May 1.
The Panther Leadership Award is presented to athletes of any academic level who epitomize what it means to be a Panther. From their pride wearing the Brown and Gold, to leading their programs both on and off the field, the athletic department recognizes their help to the community through service and helpful nature.
Wengryn not only served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) executive board, but also drove the athletic department to partner up with Morgan's Message to help raise awareness on the mental well-being of student-athletes.
"My goal for starting Morgan's Message here at Adelphi was to ultimately equalize the treatment of physical and mental health. Being an athlete myself, I know the kind of struggles we go through and how overlooked it is," said Wengryn upon accepting the award.
On the field, the redshirt sophomore hit .393 with a 1.018 OPS. The left-fielder additionally hit five round-trippers which helped her get to 40 RBI. Her efforts helped the Panthers win the Northeast-10Â Championship and host a Super-Regional aided by their 25-game win streak.
"I really wanted to emphasize that you are so much more than how you perform, and your stats do not define you. Always remember, you are a person before you are a student or an athlete," she continued.
The NE10 First Team All-Conference member also helped the athletic department push out gameday designs for social media channels using her knowledge as a marketing major with a 3.9 GPA.
Silva used his final season as a Panther to embody the words team captain in the words of head coach David Duke. Described as putting the team's game before his own, the graduate student still found a way to break a once-thought-of unbreakable record. In addition, the New Hampshire native earned a perfect 4.0 GPA while he pursued his master's in sport management.
On the court the shooting guard now owns the all-time scoring record at Adelphi, with 2,048 career points. That number was aided by a 32-point showing vs. Bentley on 12-26 shooting. Silva ended the season ranked eighth amongst the NE10 in points per game (15.4) and fourth in three-point field goal attempts (200.)
"I'd like to thank the Adelphi coaches for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play basketball and further my education. All the bonds and memories that have been created here.. I grew and evolved here at Adelphi and will always be grateful for that," Silva remarked to conclude his historic career.
