Garden City, N.Y. - Equally as skilled in both the academic and athletic arenas, Adelphi University men's soccer senior forward
Victor Castel and women's soccer senior defender
Morgan Salmon were praised as Academic All-Americans this week by College Sports Communicators.
Carrying a 3.828 cumulative grade-point average as a Nursing major, Salmon is the first Adelphi women's soccer student-athlete in the program's history to receive First Team Academic All-America status.
Meanwhile, Castel -- a CSC Second Team Academic All-American -- joins the likes of recent Adelphi strikers
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca and
Paolo Marciano to earn such distinction. Castel has produced a 3.93 GPA in his studies towards obtaining his bachelor's degree in Marketing.
After leading the 'Cats to unprecedented success in 2023, Salmon stands alongside
Taylor Groth and
Mia York as the only CSC Academic All-Americans in Adelphi women's soccer history.
As the backbone of the Adelphi defense, Salmon led the Panthers to their first NCAA Division II East Region Championship since 2004. The 'Cats ultimately knocked on the doorstep of a national championship game appearance, falling 1-0 to Washburn in the Final Four.
Of a season that saw the Panthers finish at 15-4-5, Salmon helped amass thirteen shutouts -- five of which came in the postseason. She was tabbed as the NE10 Defensive Player of the Year, and earned D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-America recognition.
Using his gifted speed on the wing, Castel tallied seven goals (three game-winners) and 17 points as the Brown and Gold's top point-getter in 2023. He ranked among the Top 5 scoring leaders in the NE10 in both categories during the regular season.
Also an NE10 First Team All-Conference performer, Castel netted six of his seven tallies in a three-week span -- including a pair of braces in back-to-back games against Southern Connecticut and Saint Michael's that cemented a United Soccer Coaches Division II National Player of the Week honor for the forward.
