New York, N.Y. - For the first time since the start of the pandemic, the Adelphi University track and field teams made their return to The
New Balance Track & Field Center at The
Armory this week for the Ramapo College Opener.
The teams came back to Garden City with a handful of top-five finishes and personal bests, as a warm up to returning to the Armory at the end of the month for the Millrose Games on Jan. 29.
To start the day of events for the men,
Dominic Testani launched a new personal best in the weight throw, landing a toss nearly half a meter farther than his last outing in December, at 12.48m. After a warm up and then a foul, his distance placed him eighth overall in a field featuring competitors from Division I Fordham, Wagner and Colgate.
On the track,
Desmond Nartey posted a new career-time in the 60m dash (unseeded) when he ran a 7.31 to place first. Competing for the first time on an indoor stage in the 800 and mile,
Diego Llanos placed sixth and eighth, respectively, setting new career marks in both. In the 60 hurdles,
Luke Sulli and
Bryan Combary came in third and fourth just a tenth of a second after one another behind a pair from Central Connecticut.
Dre Litsey and
Isaiah Ferguson placed back-to-back in the high jump, both maxing out at a height of 1.77m. In the triple jump,
James Wagnac set a new career-leap with 12.86m to take fourth in the field.
Claire O'Regan, this week's Northeast-10 Track Rookie of the Week placed fifth in both the 60m dash (8.18) and the 200m race (26.46), finishing the latter behind a pair of competitors from Fordham and one opponent each from NYU and New Haven.
Gabrielle Griffin fell short of her personal best in the 400 by two seconds, locking in a fifth place finish with a time of 1:01.86. She led teammates
Alexis Roth and
Beatriz Chavarria who placed eighth and 13th, respectively. With a new college-best,
Isabel Marsh came around in the 600 race to place second overall, clocking in at 1:40.97 in the indoor-contested event. Marsh then joined
Nikki Searles,
Lauren Toland and Chavarria for the 4x400 relay, in which they finished in a time of 4:19.95 to lock up a top-three spot.
Amari Johnson returned to the 60m hurdles this week, shaving off .12 seconds in her preliminary heat (9.02) and then eventually .07 in the finals to earn a first place finish and a new career-best time.
Adelphi's teams will head to Boston, Mass. next weekend for the John Thomas Terrier Invite, hosted by Boston University starting on Friday, Jan. 28.
